German Trip - Days 4 & 5 (Painting, chatting and wargaming)

We spent a couple of days seeing our friends Rick & Anja and mostly just relaxed. We did some final painting on our miniatures and prepared for the big Frostgrave battle we had planned.

They were very generous hosts and fed us and put up with my constant tea drinking. We talked about all sorts including how great the original Star Wars trilogy was (in particular A New Hope), how Captain America is definitely the best of the Marvel heroes, and whether Napoleon's Republic was really all that bad or not.

Laura's Scoia'tael painted and ready for battle. The falconer was a birthday gift to Laura from our hosts!

My Temerian special forces!

We also nipped out to Aldi during the day to get some food for the place where we were staying. We got some lebkuchen (of course), and some ready meals - which we noted are a lot healthier than the ready meals we get in the UK. Laura also spotted some colourful eggs, which turned out to be pre-boiled and ready to eat.

Bread machine in Aldi. You press the button and then it launches bread at you!

Bunte Eier. Painted boiled eggs. Ready to eat!

Setting up the wargames table

Laura all wrapped up in the cold wargames room, helping to set up the game

The game board, ready for battle!

After the board had been all set up for the game we prepared to start it the next morning. I'll do a proper AAR about the game itself in a future blog, but it was a good game and featured many stressful situations! My Temerians fought well, and Geralt saved a hapless soldier from a werewolf in true White Wolf fashion. Laura's Scoia'tael suffered some tragic losses, but her wizard and apprentice were excellent, and she did a good job in a tough situation. Rick's necromantic warband had a bit of a slog trying to escape a tunnel, but they ultimately managed to overpower the demonic guards and pushed on to assist Anja. Meanwhile Anja's arabic warband had a tough time, but she ultimately got the killing blow and secured victory for all of us.

Ready to begin

We had split the game up throughout the day, starting in the morning, then having a long break through the afternoon, followed by having tea then finishing off the game. Once we were finally finished it was almost midnight, so we just went straight to bed and watched an episode of Star Trek: Voyager (it was a weird one!). We would head to Rick & Anja's for one last breakfast with them the next morning, before moving onwards towards Nürnberg.
